Goddess Prajnaparamita Image
PRAJNAPARAMITA is the Buddhist Goddess of transcendental wisdom. She is the feminine "perfection of wisdom", the Mother of All Buddhas. Her face is serene, having attained the freedom of enlightenment. She is usually depicted with many arms, and the items they hold are symbolic of her role as teacher: meditation beads (the eternal cycle of time), a rope (to retrieve those who have strayed from the path), fruit (prosperity), a lotus (purity), a vase (abundance), and, most importantly, a book (wisdom). Hands that are not holding objects are in the mudra, or hand gesture, for teaching. The Prajnaparamita Sutras are a collection of sacred writings that reveal the path to wisdom, and they are taken to be the teachings of the Goddess. There is some question as to whether the book or the Goddess came first.

Goddess Ame No Uzume

Goddess Ame No Uzume Image
AME-NO-UZUME is the Japanese Goddess of merrymaking and dance. She is the one who lured the sun Goddess Amaterasu to come out of her self-imposed exile in a cave, returning sunlight to the world. She overturned a washtub and began to dance on it, to the delight of the surrounding Gods and Goddesses. Their laughter at her antics made Amaterasu curious enough to step out of her cave. Ame-no-Uzume's dances have been carried down to modern times as the "kagura".

Ame-no-Uzume also accompanied Amaterasu's grandson Ninigi to earth, where he was to become the first emperor of Japan. When he was about to descend, a large monster appeared in his path, so Ninigi sent the fearless Ame-no-Uzume ahead to investigate. She approached the monster with bare breasts and a mocking laugh, asking who he was to stand in Ninigi's way. He turned out to be Saruta-Hiko, God of the crossroads, and he was only there to welcome Ninigi. Ame-no-Uzume eventually married Saruta-Hiko.

Ame-no-Uzume's name means "whirling heavenly woman" and is also seen as UZUME, AME-NO-UZUME-NO-MIKOTO, and AME-NO-UZUME-NO-KAMI. Epithets for her include THE GREAT PERSUADER, TERRIBLE FEMALE OF HEAVEN, DAUGHTER OF HEAVEN, HEAVEN'S FORTHRIGHT FEMALE, and THE HEAVENLY ALARMING FEMALE.

Who Is Lady Justice Image
THEMIS IS THE GREEK GODDESS OF DIVINE JUSTICE, THE GODDESS OF ORDER AND LAW. SHE IS THE FORCE OF TRADITION AND CUSTOM AND RULES. SHE IS ONE OF THE 12 TITANS BORN AS A RESULT OF THE SEXUAL UNION OF URANUS (SKY) AND GAEA (EARTH) AND THE WIFE OF ZEUS. SHE IS THE MOTHER OF THE HORAE (SEASONS), EUNOMIA (WISE LEGISLATION), DIKE (JUSTICE), EIRENE (PEACE), AND THE THREE FATES. THEMIS ALSO CONVENED AND DISSOLVED THE ASSEMBLIES OF GODS. SHE IS ALSO THE PATRONESS OF ORACLES AND INTUITIVES--SPECIFICALLY THOSE WHO SEEK TO USE THEIR GIFTS FO UPHOLD AND TEACH DIVINE LAW. IT IS BELIEVED THAT SHE HAD PROPHETIC POWERS AND SAT AS THE ORACLE AT DELPHI BEFORE GIVING IT OVER TO APOLLO.

IT WAS THEMIS WHO INTRODUCED THE ORDINANCES TO THE GODS AND INSTRUCTED MEN IN THE WAYS OF OBEDIENCE TO LAWS AND PEACE. WE KNOW WE HAVE RECEIVED A MESSAGE FROM HER WHEN WE LISTEN TO OUR VOICE OF CONSCIENCE. SHE IS USUALLY DEPICTED AS A BLINDFOLDED WOMAN, HOLDING A BALANCED SET OF SCALES; WE SEE HER TODAY IN OUR COURTROOMS AND OUR GOVERNMENT BUILDINGS.

WE HAVE BEEN BLESSED WITH THE GIFT OF FREE WILL. THIS MEANS THAT WE HAVE BEEN GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE CHOICES IN OUR LIVES, AND THERE ARE CONSEQUENCES FOR ALL OF OUR ACTIONS. SOMETIMES OUR DECISIONS MAY NOT BE WHAT IS BEST FOR OURSELVES AND THOSE AROUND US. THINK BACK ON YOUR OWN LIFE AND HOW ONE SEEMINGLY INSIGNIFICANT ACTION OR COMMENT BY SOMEONE MADE AN UNBELIEVABLE IMPACT ON YOUR LIFE, OR HOW A SMALL ACTION OR COMMENT MADE BY YOURSELF WAS HURTFUL TO SOMEONE ELSE. IT IS THEMIS WHO REMINDS US OF THE IMPORTANCE OF OUR THOUGHTS AND ACTIONS FOR EVERY LIVING BEING. IF YOU SEEK HER COUNSEL, SHE WILL HELP YOU TO CHOOSE WISELY. SHE WILL ALSO HELP YOU TO UNDERSTAND THAT WE ARE ALL A PART OF THE CYCLICAL NATURE OF LIFE. WHEN WE HAVE RECEIVED A MESSAGE FROM THEMIS, WE LISTEN TO THE VOICE OF OUR CONSCIENCE.
