DOLYA (pronounced DOLE-yah) is the Slavic Goddess of luck. She is said to live behind the stove in the family home. When she is happy, she appears as a beautiful young maiden and bestows good luck on all the inhabitants of the house. When she is unhappy, she appears as NEDOLYA, a withered old woman, and brings bad luck to all who live in the house. Dolya and Nedolya are also associated with the great mother Goddess Makosh--they assist her in spinning the threads of life.

Huitzilopochtli

His temple (next to that of Tlaloc) on the Main Pyramid was the focus of fearsome sacrifices of prisoners captured by Aztec warriors. Victims' heads were strung as trophies on a great rack, the Tzompantli, erected in the precinct below.

God of War-Lord of the South-The Young Warrior-Lord of the Day- The Blue Tezcatliopoca of the South-Patron God of the Mexica. Known metaphorically as "The Blue Heron Bird", "The Lucid Macaw", and "The Eagle".

The derivation of his name may have come from the ancient Chichimeca "Tetzauhteotl", possibly meaning "Omen-God".

He is considered an incarnation of the sun and struggles with the forces of night to keep mankind alive. Only to have found a place of major worship among the Aztec peoples. Huitzilopochtli is credited with inducing the Aztecs to migrate from their homeland in "Aztlan" and begin the long wanderings which brought their tribe to the Mexico Valley.

According to Aztec legend, Coatlicue, goddess of the earth had given birth to the moon and stars. The moon, Coyolxauhqui, and the stars called, Centzonhuitznahuac, became jealous of Coatlicue's pregnancy with Huitzilopochtli. During his birth, Huitzilopochtli used the "serpent of fire" and the sun's rays to defeat the moon and stars. Every day the battle continues between day and night. The Mexica saw the sunrise as a daily victory for this deity over the forces of darkness.

Huitzilopochtli can only be fed by Chalchihuatl, or the blood of sacrifice, to sustain him in his daily battle. He resides in the seventh heaven of Aztec mythology. The seventh heaven is represented as blue. His temple on the great Pyramid in Tenochtitlan was called Lihuicatl Xoxouqui, or "Blue Heaven". Over 20,000 victims are thought to have been ritually killed at the opening of his great temple in Tenochtitlan during a four day period.

Duran relates that the great temple contained a wooden statue carved to look like a man sitting on a blue wood bench. A serpent pole extended from each corner to give the appearance of the bench as a litter. On his head was placed a headdress in the shape of a bird's beak. A curtain was always hung in front of the image to indicate reverence.

Tlacaelel, the Aztec power broker, is thought to have propelled this god into the place of importance that Huitzilopochtli held, some suggest even re-writing Mexican history.

Huitzilopochtli's creation may have come from the ancient Mexica god "Opochtli", the Left Handed One, and a leading old Chichimec god of weapons and water. He was called "He Who Divides the Waters", and was principal in worship in the Huitzilopochco area and it's famous waters. Opochtli is thought to have been worshipped in ancient Aztlan.

Huitzilopochtli is said to be a representation of Tezcatlipoca in midsummer as the high sun in the southern sky. His name may have derived with his association with the color blue as when staring at the sun, spots of blue are seen by the eyes after looking away. His association with "on the left", was because when facing in the direction of the sun's path, east to west, the sun passed on the left.

Huitzilopochtli was the most celebrated of the Mexican deities and came to embody the aspirations and accomplishments of the Aztec. His cult could have been considered the "state cult" and was a focus of the powerful economic and political system.

Also known as "The Portentous One", as he directed the Mexica on their nomadic trek into the Valley of Mexico through a series of signs and omens. It was Huitzilopochtli who sent the eagle to perch on the nopal cactus to indicate the site of the Mexica's final resting place. His elevation to the rank of a major deity coincided with the formation of the triple alliance between Tenochtitlan, Texcoco, and Tlacopan. At this formation of the alliance his recognition as the god of war was complete and total.

As the power of Tenochtitlan grew his image was incorporated into the new lands and regions coming under Mexica control and he assumed new prominence and attributes even to the point of usurping the more traditional sun god, Tonatiuh. His main temple in the great temple of Tenochtitlan, (the Temple Mayor), was set alongside Tlaloc, god of rain, the symbolism of these two deities elevated above all others was a reflection of the economic status of the Mexica empire, (agriculture and war-tribute). Of interest many pictures and statues have survived of Tlaloc and other major deities but relatively few of Huitzilopochtli.

Images of Huitzilopochtli may be found in the Codex Borbonicus in which he is depicted standing in front of a small temple in his honor, in the Codex Telleriano-Remensis, in his capacity as symbol of the month of Panquetzaliztli, and in a dual painting with Paynal, (messenger god), in Sahagun's Primeros Memoriales. His image further adorns the Codex Boturini in his guidance of the Mexica on their wanderings.

In the Codex Azcatitlan he is represented as a combination hummingbird and serpent tail being carried in what might be thought of as a backpack. In the Codex Florentine his birth is recorded as well as his famous battle with the stars. In all painted images his adornments are different, some with a shield of turquoise mosaic, others with a shield of white eagle feathers. The central image in all drawings is that of a warrior and a leader. He is often depicted as a seed dough image or "teixiptla" which was often made and prized during feasts.

Although Huitzilopochtli was worshipped greatly during the entire Mexica year he was of particular importance during the feast of Toxcatl, Dry Thing, Tlaxochimaco, Giving of Flowers, Teotleco, Arrival of Gods, and Panquetzaliztli, Raising of Banners. The feast honoring the raising of banners is generally thought to be his major yearly feast.

Nowhere was Huitzilopochtli more honored than in his main temple atop the great pyramid in Tenochtitlan in the Temple Mayor. His main cult statue stood in the southernmost corner of the twin shrines to him and Tlaloc. The shrine to this deity is described in detail by Duran as well as accounts by several of the soldiers with Cortes, namely Andres de Tapia and Bernal Diaz as well as Cortes himself.

Duran claims to describe the statue based on reports from native informants and from direct interviews with surviving conquistadors. He describes the image as a wooden statue carved to look like a man seated on a blue wooden bench in the form of a liter. The liter poles contained images of serpents long enough to be carried on the shoulder of men. The bench was in the traditional Huitzilopochtli "sky blue" color. The image itself had a blue forehead with a blue band reaching from ear to ear also blue.

The image had a headdress shaped like a hummingbird beak made of gold. The feathers adorning the headdress were a beautiful green. In his left hand he held a shield, white, with five bunches of white feathers in the form of a cross. Four arrows extended from the handle of the shield. In his right hand he held a staff in the image of a serpent which was also blue. Gold bracelets were on his wrists and he wore blue foot sandals. This image was covered from view with a type of curtain adorned with jewels and gold. Bernal Diaz also relates an account and it is certainly worth reading.

Huitzilopochtli shared the top of the great temple with Tlaloc in Texcoco as well as in Tenochtitlan and is described in detail in Pomar's book. Pomar's Huitzilopochtli was an image of a standing young man, made from wood adorned with a cloak of rich feathers and wearing an ornate necklace of jade and turquoise surrounded by golden bells. His body paint was blue with a blue striped face. His hair was of eagle feathers and had a headdress of quetzal (46) feathers.

Oh his shoulder was a form of a hummingbird's head. His legs were adorned and decorated with gold bells. In his hand was held a large spear, a spearthrower, and a feathered shield covered with a lattice work of gold stripes.

There was no greater worshipped image to the Mexica and the stone idol that was atop the pyramid in Tenochtitlan that was removed under the eyes of Cortes. The idol was entrusted to a man called Tlatolatl. Tlatolatl successfully was able to hide this image of Huitzilopochtli as was uncovered during an investigation by the Bishop Zummaraga during the 1530's. The statue has never been found and is probably resting and waiting today in a cave somewhere in northern Mexico.

Listed in the Codex Boturini, the sacred bundle of Huitzilopochtli carried during the wandering years was born by four "bearers", named Tezacoatl, (Mirror Serpent), Chimalma, (Shield Hand), Apanecatl, (Water Headdress), and Cuauhcoatl, (Eagle Serpent). The Codex Azcatitlan shows only two god bearers. Duran agrees that there were four bearers but does not name them. Juan de Torquemada in his "Monarquia indiana also confers the four god bearers. Hernando Alvarado Tezozomoc keeps the bearer Cuauhcoatl but replaces the other three with Quauhtlonquetzque, Axoloa, and Ococaltzin. To further confuse this issue the Cronica Mexicayotl replaces Cuauhcoatl, (Eagle Serpent), with Iztamixcoatzin, (White Cloud Serpent).

SHE IS AS timeless as life itself, as old as the beginning of religious consciousness, this the mother of the gods. She is attended by seven goddesses who act as Her handmaidens. She created the Sky god, "An", and the Earth Goddess "Ki. "The offspring of "An "and "Ki "made all the plants and animals. "Nammu " is also the mother of "Enki" and of "Ereshkigal", the Goddess of the Underworld. Her high status corresponded to the reverence held towards women in Sumerian society. Eventually, She lost Her powers as Goddess of the Sea when they were turned over to the male deity, "Enki"..".a bit of early patriarchal rivalry while still in the days of matrilineal rule.

Nevertheless, it appears that this Goddess was still worshipped well into the third millennium B.C. as evidenced by the naming of the royal city, "Ur Nammu" where statues were commissioned in Her honor.

In Aztec mythology, Chicomecoatl ("Seven Serpent", also the name of a day of the Aztec calendar) was a goddess of food and produce, especially maize and, by extension, a goddess of fertility.

Every September, she received a sacrifice of young girl, decapitated. The sacrifice's blood was poured on a statue of Chicmecoatl and her skin was worn by a priest. She was thought of as a female counterpart to Centeotl and was also called Xilonen ("the hairy one", which referred to the hairs on unshucked maize), who was married to Tezcatlipoca. She often appeared with attributes of Chalchiuhtlicue, such as her headdress and the short lines rubbing down her cheeks. She is usually distinguished by being shown carrying ears of maize. She is shown in three different forms:

- As a young girl carrying flowers
- As a woman who brings death with her embraces
- As a mother who uses the sun as a shield

ACCORDING TO LEGEND, SHE WAS UNABLE TO FIND A SUITABLE HUSBAND IN THE HEAVENS, SO SHE SCOURED THE LANDS OF SOUTH AFRICA IN SEARCH OF A MORTAL HUSBAND, AND THEN DEFIED ALL OF THE OTHER GODS WHEN SHE FELL IN LOVE WITH A MORTAL MAN. IN ORDER TO MAKE SURE HE LOVED HER, SHE TESTED HIM BY SENDING A BEAUTIFUL BRIDE IN HER PLACE WHILE SHE DISGUISED HERSELF AS AN UGLY HAG. Asclepius was the god of medicine and healing in ancient Greek mythology, according to which he was born a mortal but was given immortality as the constellation Ophiuchus after his death. His name means "cut up," and (perhaps incidentially) shares a root with the word scalpel. He represents the healing aspect of the medical arts, while his daughters Hygieia, Meditrine, and Panacea symbolize the forces of cleanliness, medicine and healing (literally, "all-healing"), respectively. Occasionally he is also linked to his son Telesforos, who represents the powers of recuperation.

Coronis (or Arsinoe) became pregnant with Asclepius by Apollo but fell in love with Ischys, son of Elatus. A crow informed Apollo of the affair and he sent his sister, Artemis, to kill Coronis. Her body was burned on a funeral pyre, staining the white feathers of the crows permanently black. Apollo rescued the baby performing the first caesarean section and gave it to the centaur Chiron to raise. Engraged by his grief, Coronis' father Phlegyas torched the Apollonian temple at Delphi, for which Apollo promptly killed him.

Chiron taught Asclepius the art of surgery, teaching him to be the most well-respected doctor of his day. According to the Pythian Odes of Pindar, Chiron also taught him the use of drugs, incantations and love potions. In The Library, Apollodorus claimed that Athena gave him a vial of blood from the Gorgons. Gorgon blood had magical properties: if taken from the left side of the Gorgon, it was a fatal poison; from the right side, the blood was capable of bringing the dead back to life. According to some, Asclepius fought alongside the Achaeans in the Trojan War, and cured Philoctetes of his famous snake bite. However, others have attributed this to either Machaon or Podalirius, Asclepius' sons, who Homer mentions repeatedly in his Iliad as talented healers. Asclepius, on the other hand, is only refered to in Homer in relation to Machaon and Podalirius.

Asclepius' powers were not appreciated by all, and his ability to revive the dead soon drew the ire of Zeus, who struck him down with a thunderbolt. According to some, Zeus was angered, specifically, by Asclepius' acceptance of money in exchange for resurrection. Others say that Zeus killed Asclepius after he agreed to resurrect Hippolytus at the behest of Athena. In this version, Zeus smote both men with one bolt. Either way, Asclepius' death at the hands of Zeus illustrates man's inability to challenge the natural order that separates mortal men from the gods.

In retaliation for Asclepius' murder at the hands of Zeus, Apollo killed the Cyclopes, who fashioned Zeus' thunderbolts.

After he realized Asclepius' importance to the world of men, Zeus placed him in the sky as the constellation Ophiuchus. The name, "serpent-bearer," refers to the Asclepius' staff, which was entwined with a single serpent. This symbol has now become a symbol for physicians across the globe. However, one should be careful not to confuse the Staff of Asclepius, which features a single serpent, with the Caduceus of Mercury (Roman), or the Karykeion of Hermes. The Caduceus, which features two intertwined serpents (rather than the single serpent in Asclepius' wand), as well as a pair of wings, has long been a symbol of commerce. It is thought that the two were first confused in the seventh century A.D., when alchemists often used the caduceus to symbolize their assosiation with magical or "hermetic" arts.

In honor of Asclepius, snakes were often used in healing rituals. Non-poisonous snakes were left to crawl on the floor in dormitories where the sick and injured slept. Starting about 300 BCE, the cult of Asclepius grew very popular. His healing temples were called asclepieion; pilgrims flocked to them to be healed. They slept overnight and reported their dreams to a priest the following day. He prescribed a cure, often a visit to the baths or a gymnasium.

Hippocrates, the legendary doctor, may have begun his career at an asclepieion on the island of Cos.

Asclepius was married to Salus (or Epione) and with her fathered six daughters: Aceso, Iaso, Panacea, Aglaea, Meditrine and Hygieia, and three sons: Machaon, Telesforos and Polidarius. His most famous sanctuary was in Epidaurus in Northeastern Peloponnese.

Socrates' last words as reported in Plato's Phaedo are a reminder to Crito to sacrifice a cock, a bird sacred to Asclepius.The original, ancient Hippocratic Oath begins with the invocation "I swear | by Apollo the Physician and by Asclepius and by Hygieia and Panacea and by all the gods..."The botanical genus Asclepias (known as milkweeds, is named after him, including the medicinal A. tuberosa or "Pleurisy root")

Not to be confused with the Greek Goddess of madness (also named Mania), she is called the mother of the Manes, the souls of the dead, who became her children when they descended to the Underworld. She was also later said to be the mother of the Lares, the household Gods. Mania rules over the Underworld along with Mantus, God of the dead. Her image was hung over doors to frighten away evil spirits. Mania's name is also seen as MANEA and MANIA DELLA NOTTE ("Mania of the night").

HUIXTOCIHUATL (pronounced we-sto-key-WAH-tl) is the Aztec Goddess of salt and salt water. She is the older sister of the rain Gods, the Tlaloques, the most important of whom was named simply Tlaloc. The Tlaloques were responsible for releasing the rains, and in an argument, they drove off their sister Huixtocihuatl and threw all of their salt water at her, giving her reign over it forever. In the month of the Little Feast of the Lords, a woman was sacrificed to Huixtocihuatl and salt makers performed special dances in her honor. She is usually depicted wearing a skirt adorned with waves and jadeite, with golden bells around her ankles. She carried a special shield with a picture of a waterlily and decorated with parrot, eagle, and quetzal feathers. Huixtocihuatl's name, which means "salt lady," is also seen as UIXTOCIHUATL.

IZANAMI is the Shinto Goddess of creation and death. She personifes the Earth and darkness. She and her brother/husband Izanagi were the first beings on earth. When they wanted to be married, they built a pillar called Ame-no-mihashira (pillar of heaven). They walked around the pillar from opposite directions, and when they met, Izanami was the first to speak. Izanagi did not think this was proper, but they married anyway. Izanami bore two children, but they were both deformed. The Gods advised that this was because Izanami had spoken first when they met around the pillar. They tried again, and this time Izanagi spoke first. The children that followed this second union became the eight islands of the Japanese chain.

Izanami was burned to death giving birth to Kagu-Tsuchi, the incarnation of fire. In anger, Izanagi killed the child and cut his body into eight pieces, which each turned into volcanoes. Izanagi then tried to retrieve his wife from the underworld, but Izanami had already partaken of the food of the dead and could no longer leave. Izanagi did not want to leave her, but he saw that she had been claimed by death and had begun to rot. He turned and ran, barricading the entrance to the underworld. Izanami was enraged at her husband's sudden betrayal, and vowed to kill 1000 of his subjects (the living) every day. Izanagi, in return, vowed to create 1500 new subjects every day, so that there would always be more living than dead.

Izanami's name means "she who invites", and she is also known as IZANAMI-NO-MIKOTO or IZANAMI-NO-KAMI.

Narasimha (also spelt as Narasingh and Narasinga, is an avatara of Vishnu described in the Puranas, Upanishads and other ancient religious texts of Hinduism, and one of Hinduism's most popular deities, as evidenced in early epics, iconography, and temple and festival worship for over a millennium.

He is often visualized as half-man/half-lion, having a human-like torso and lower body, with a lion-like face and claws. This image is widely worshiped in deity form by a significant number of Vaishnava groups, particularly in Southern India. He is known primarily as the 'Great Protector' who specifically defends and protects his devotees in times of need.

References to Narasimha are found in a wide variety of the Puranic scriptures, with seventeen versions of the main narrative, some in more detail than others. The Bhagavata Purana (Canto 7), Agni Purana (4.2-3), Brahmanda Purana (2.5.3-29), Vayu Purana (67.61-66), Harivamsa (41 & 3.41-47), Brahma Purana (213.44-79), Vishnudharmottara Purana (1.54), Kurma Purana (1.15.18-72), Matsya Purana (161-163), Padma Purana (Uttara-khanda 5.42), Shiva Purana (2.5.43 & 3.10-12), Linga Purana (1.95-96), Skanda Purana 7 (2.18.60-130) and Vishnu Purana (1.16-20) all contain depictions of the Narasimha avatar. There is also a short reference in the Mahabharata (3.272.56-60) and a Tapani Upanishad (Narasimha tapani Upanisad), earliest of Vaishnava Upanishads named in reference to him.

One phrase of the Rig Veda appears to indicate an epithet that can be rightly attributed to the form of Vishnu as Narasimha. It clearly calls the qualities of Vishnu that are seen only in this avatara as "like some wild beast, dread, prowling, mountain-roaming" (RV.I 154.2a). There is a reference or an allusion to knowledge of Namuci story in RV.VIII 14.13: "With waters' foam you tore off, Indra, the head of Namuci, subduing all contending hosts." This short reference is believed to have culminated in the full puranic story of this highly popular Narasimha form.

Demon Hiranyakashipan, performed vigourous tapas to Lord Brahma for taking revenge on Devas as his brother Hiranyaksha was killed by Lord Vishnu,and to conquer the universe.

After performing tapas for a long time the demon Hiranyakashipan got a boon from brahma such that he cannot be killed either by a human being or an animal,neither demon nor god,nor with a weapon,and neither in day or night,nor inside or outside.

So after getting a boon he returned to his kingdom and began to conquer the earth.He is above to show his power on devas.He has got a child named Prahlada.The demon Hiranyakashapan,wished his son to learn asura vidyas,and to become a powerfull king of asuras.And sent him to a guru,and prahlada refused to leave the Lord Vishnu Devotion.

Demon Hiranyakashipan,with the pride of his boon,and in a thought of conquering of earth,and thought to declare himself as god and stopped all Vishnu poojas.

Prahlada,has told his father that the Lord Vishnu is the only god,and had not accepted his father as a God.And with an anger on his son,Demon Hiranyakashipan has ordered his servants,to kill Prahlada.The servants has thrown Prahlada from top of mountains,and in to the sea,in to snakes,and thrown into fire.But as he started praying Lord Vishnu,he could not be killed.

In return the servants had taken him to the Demon Hiranyakashipan,and he asked prahlada that where is Lord Vishnu present,in order to fight with him.The prahlada replied that he is present every where.He asked prahlada,Is ur Lord Vishnu present in this pillar.The Demon Hiranyakashapan,took his mace above to beat the pillar to find Lord Vishnu and fight with him,then the Lord Vishnu emerged from the pillar incarnated as Lord Narasimha,a lion headed,and as Demon Hiranyakashapan was a great devotee of Lord Shiva,Lord Shiva came to save him and fight with Lord Vishnu.Lord Narasimha with a fiercefull face and by his unlimited power,Lord Shiva went back away.

Demon Hiranyakashipan,was on the thighs of Lord Narasimha at the exit of the court,neither inside or outside,in the dawn,neither in the day or night,with his nails he opened his stomach,which is not a weapon,and killed him,and made the great devotee Prahlada the king.And Prahladas grand son was the King Bali.

MATANGI is the Hindu Goddess of inner thought. She is one of the Mahavidyas, the wisdom Goddesses. She has dominion over the throat chakra, and therefore the spoken word as well. Matangi is the dark form of the Goddess Sarasvati, Goddess of knowledge, and as such she presides over the more mystic inner kind of knowledge. She is depicted with dark green skin and three eyes, and she holds a parrot and a veena (the same musical instrument as Sarasvati).

Matangi is also referred to as the Goddess who loves pollution. This strange epithet comes from one story of her origin. Vishnu and Lakshmi had gone to visit Shiva and Parvati, bringing with them various foods. Some of the food fell to the floor, and from the pieces there arose a maiden, who asked for the leftovers. Shiva told her that whoever worshipped her would be very successful, and named her UCCISHTHA-MATANGINI. Leftover food is considered to be polluted in Hinduism, and thus her epithet.
