Dagon

Dagon Cover
Dagon was originally a fertility god, though once these beliefs adapted to Hebrews he evolved into a major northwest Semitic god, reportedly of fish and/or fishing. He was worshipped by the early Amorites and by the inhabitants of the cities of Ebla (modern Tell Mardikh, Syria) and Ugarit (modern Ras Shamra, Syria) (which was an ancient city near the Mediterranean containing a large variety of ancient writings and pagan shrines). He was also a major member, or perhaps head, of the pantheon of the Biblical Philistines. His name appears in Hebrew as, in Ugaritic as dgn (probably vocalized as Dagnu), and in Akkadian as Dagana, Daguna usually rendered in English translations as Dagan.

Dagon was the god of the Philistines. The idol was represented in the combination of both man and fish. Although there was a deep affection from Dagon's worshippers to their deity, the symbol of a fish in human form was really meant to represent fertility and the vivifying powers of nature and reproduction.

The Babylonians had a myth that a being emerged from the Erythraean Sea who was part man and part fish and thus adopted the deity into their culture in their earliest days in history. Their have also been discoveries of the fish-god in the sculptures found in Nineveh, Assyria.

"When the Philistines took the ark of God, they brought it into the temple of Dagon and set it by Dagon. And when the people of Ashdod arose early in the morning, there was Dagon, fallen on its face to the earth before the ark of the LORD. So they took Dagon and set it in its place again. And when they arose early the next morning, there was Dagon, fallen on its face to the ground before the ark of the LORD. The head of Dagon and both the palms of its hands were broken off on the threshold; only the torso of Dagon was left of it. Therefore neither the priests of Dagon nor any who come into Dagon's house tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod to this day."

- 1 Sam 5:2-5: "Now the lords of the Philistines gathered together to offer a great sacrifice to Dagon their god, and to rejoice. And they said: "Our god has delivered into our hands Samson our enemy!" When the people saw him, they praised their god; for they said: "Our god has delivered into our hands our enemy, The destroyer of our land, And the one who multiplied our dead."

Goddess Zigu Shen Image
ZIGU SHEN is the Chinese Goddess of concubines and latrines. She was born as a peasant and sold to a man named Wei Zixu to be his concubine. Wei's wife Caogu was very cruel to Zigu Shen and forced her to live next to the outdoor latrine. After Caogu beat her to death, she buried her next to the latrine. When the Heavenly Emperor learned of her fate, he turned Zigu Shen into a Goddess, and gave her dominion over the relationship between wives and concubines. He gave her a bow and arrows with which to shoot cruel wives. Zigu Shen was also given dominion over latrines, and was later associated with spirit writing. Her name, which means "purple lady," is also seen as CESHEN, TZU-KU SHEN, KENG SAN GU NIANG (Third Daughter of the Latrine), MAO GU (Lady of the Latrine), and QI FUREN (Lady Qi).

Nisroch

Nisroch Cover
Nisroch is the Assyrian god of agriculture, in whose temple Sennacherib was worshipping when he was assassinated. Josephus calls him Dagon. According to the etymology, the name would signify eagle. Nisroch was depicted as an eagle-headed diety with wings and exaggerated muscles. In this sculptured relief from Nineveh he is sprinkling the sacred tree with water. He is holding a water vessel in his left hand and a fir cone (sponge) in his right. Among the ancient Arabs, also, the eagle occurs as an idol. His identification as a god in Mesopotamia is unclear. Some suggest he could be the same as Nusku.

It was to this god that Sennacherib, king of Assyria was praying when he returned from his campaigns in Israel. The previous verse reveals that the Angel of the Lord routed the Assyrian army.

"So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, and went and returned, and dwelt at Nineveh. And it came to pass, as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons smote him with the sword: and they escaped into the land of Armenia. And Esarhaddon his son reigned in his stead." (2 Kings 19:36-37)

The Idol is mentioned throughout the Bible:

Isaiah 48:5 - I have even from the beginning declared [it] to thee; before it came to pass I shewed [it] thee: lest thou shouldest say, Mine idol hath done them, and my graven image, and my molten image, hath commanded them.

2 Chronicles 33:15 - And he took away the strange gods, and the idol out of the house of the LORD, and all the altars that he had built in the mount of the house of the LORD, and in Jerusalem, and cast [them] out of the city.

Isaiah 66:3 - He that killeth an ox [is as if] he slew a man; he that sacrificeth a lamb, [as if] he cut off a dog's neck; he that offereth an oblation, [as if he offered] swine's blood; he that burneth incense, [as if] he blessed an idol. Yea, they have chosen their own ways, and their soul delighteth in their abominations.

1 Corinthians 10:19 - What say I then? that the idol is any thing, or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is any thing?

2 Chronicles 33:7 - And he set a carved image, the idol which he had made, in the house of God, of which God had said to David and to Solomon his son, In this house, and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen before all the tribes of Israel, will I put my name for ever:

Jeremiah 22:28 - [Is] this man Coniah a despised broken idol? [is he] a vessel wherein [is] no pleasure? wherefore are they cast out, he and his seed, and are cast into a land which they know not?

Acts 7:41 - And they made a calf in those days, and offered sacrifice unto the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their own hands.

1 Corinthians 8:4 - As concerning therefore the eating of those things that are offered in sacrifice unto idols, we know that an idol [is] nothing in the world, and that [there is] none other God but one.

1 Corinthians 8:7 - Howbeit [there is] not in every man that knowledge: for some with conscience of the idol unto this hour eat [it] as a thing offered unto an idol; and their conscience being weak is defiled.

2 Chronicles 15:16 - And also [concerning] Maachah the mother of Asa the king, he removed her from [being] queen, because she had made an idol in a grove: and Asa cut down her idol, and stamped [it], and burnt [it] at the brook Kidron.

1 Kings 15:13 - And also Maachah his mother, even her he removed from [being] queen, because she had made an idol in a grove; and Asa destroyed her idol, and burnt [it] by the brook Kidron.

The Triple Goddes Shakti

Posted by Unknown

The Triple Goddes Shakti Image
Shakti is one of the primordial goddesses of India. Her name means power. As a Triple Goddess, she brings together Sarasvati, Lakshmi, and Kali and offers us an integration of the light and dark forces which can be used to create or destroy. Like the muses, she can inspire our creativity...especially poetry. Shakti can give us energy in our lives.

Sarasvati is The Flowering One. She is the goddess of knowledge. Her influence is spread to all the arts and creativity...music, painting, sculpture, dance, and writing. The Hindus credit her with presenting the gift of writing to mankind so that all of her songs could be written down and preserved. Her shrine is placed in libraries and decorated with flowers.

Lakshmi is a goddess of fertility and abundance and is usually invoked for prosperity. Her head appears on coins. She is revered as a protector of the body and of children. Her four hands represent four spiritual virtues. She sits on a fully blossomed lotus which is a seat of divine truth. Her palm is always extended to bless her people.

Kali is perhaps the most misunderstood of the Hindu goddesses. She is often portrayed as the goddess of death, but she is also the symbol of eternal time; she not only destroys life, but all gives it. She is invoked to protect the crops and harvest and to guard against smallpox and cholera. She is often portrayed as bare-breasted with her hair hanging loose and her tongue hanging out. (More about Kali to follow).

Invocation For Shakti

Shakti, allow me to experience my darkness, and not be afraid. Let me meet Kali and journey from dark into light. Sarasvati help me to blossom and flower and discover my creativity, and Lakshmi, protect me and let me find abundance. Shakti accompany my journey through darkness and help me to believe that I will see light again. When all seems lost, reassure me that I will feel creative once more.

Goddess Qadesh Image
"QADESH", "THE MISTRESS OF THE GODS," IS A NATURE GODDESS OF SYRIAN ORIGIN WHO LATER BECAME THE EGYPTIAN GODDESS OF SACRED LOVE AND SENSUAL PLEASURE. SHE IS USUALLY DEPICTED AS A NAKED WOMAN WITH A MOON CRESCENT ON HER HEAD, STANDING ATOP A LION. HER HANDS HOLD SYMBOLS OF EROTICISM AND FERTILITY. IN HER RIGHT HAND SHE HOLDS LOTUS FLOWERS, AND IN HER LEFT, TWO SNAKES. SHE IS THE SPIRIT OF BEAUTY, JOY, AND POWER.

SHE WAS ORIGINALLY THE WIFE OF THE SYRIAN GOD OF WAR AND PLAGUE, "RESHEP", WHO WAS INTRODUCED TO THE EGYPTIAN PANTHEON DURING THE NEW KINGDOM CULT OF THE NAKED GODDESS. "QADESH "WAS ALSO CONSIDERED THE CONSORT OF" MIN", THE GOD OF VIRILITY.

SHE HAD DOMINION OVER WOMEN'S MYSTERIES, YET LITTLE IS KNOWN OF HER VENERATION EXCEPT THAT HER NAME IS OFTEN LINKED WITH PROSTITUTION REFERRING TO A CLASS OF SACRED PROSTITUTES OF THE CULT OF "ASHERAH". IN FACT, "QADESH" IS SOMETIMES THOUGHT OF AS AN ASPECT OF "ASHERAH" RATHER THAN A DISTINCT GODDESS.
